The tea management course in Kolkata is a job oriented professional course and covers all aspects of the business. At the heart of the programme, is a course for freshers -graduates without any exposure to the tea industry. They are going to be put through, educated and trained in all the various stages, right from the planting of the tea bush to the marketing of the finished product. The theoretical part includes soil tests, tea tasting, blending, tea economics and the principles and practices of management i.e. field and factory, as well as computer applications. There are papers on theory with marks allotted for the off campus training, project work and practicals. The course begins with history of tea - its cultivation and research. Biology of tea plants, covers areas like photosynthesis, transpiration, growth factors and environmental effects on the physiology of tea. Students learn the theoretical intricacies of manuring, pruning and plucking, and all about organic farming as well, in the tea husbandry paper. There is also another paper that deals with the pest problems of tea. It acquaints students with the pests and diseases that destroy tea bushes. The paper on management is quite comprehensive as well. It includes topics like corporate planning arid strategy, diversification, acquisition and personnel management apart from all major acts governing the corporate world. "DIPS" makes its students start right from the scratch. Students will learn the techniques of bush planting, assessing the quality of soil, and even handling labour problems and computers. This course is quite comprehensive and stresses theory and practical training equally. Tea-tasting is a very important component of the programme. It is generally learnt on the job. But here, specialists will be training students on how to identify manufacturing defects by tasting the liquor. DIPS has devised, intensive programme to help students detect changes in taste and flavour. This is supported by theory as well. There is a separate paper on tea tasting. More emphasis has been put on the manufacturing part and on computers. The final component of this course is a four-to-six week's i.e. one to one and-a-half month training in a tea garden. This is where student's skills are going to be tested to the hilt. They are sent to an estate either in Assam, Cachar or in North Bengal. The off campus training will give students the much needed exposure to the day-to-day management of the tea garden. They are taken to the gardens for direct interaction with industry. DIPS groom the students in such a way that they are ready to face any challenging or problem solving assignment related to tea. Be it inside the garden or anywhere else. They are also taught the modalities and techniques to confidently face the interview board. The need for a comprehensive course on tea was felt for sometime. Therefore, the heads of the tea industry and research scientists got together and the idea of DIPS-School of Tea was conceived. The idea is to have people with hands-on experience- Other than that, the focus is on personality development. Tea is a very organized sector and the students must be ready to meet its demands. The course curriculum is being updated and revised regularly in consultation and in terms with the needs of the Tea and allied industries. The emphasis is also given on the manufacturing aspects and DIPS students are taken to factories engaged in the manufacturing of Tea machineries wherein they are given the much required first hand exposure of machines used for Tea manufacturing.

In this present day world of Information Technology a student can have an edge not only with computer exposure, but implementation of Job assignments, decision making, taking accountability, receiving and transmitting of management and day to day information through computers, have become the order of the day with the corporate and public sector as well. Specialized computer education is of utmost utility is still expensive and beyond the reach of many willing candidates. DIPS has hardcore IT experts who imparts IT education for its Tea Management students within their reach, under the same roof, during current Tea Management course. This computer education is available within the tea management course fees for DIPS Tea Management students. BALANCING YIELD & QUALITY
DIPS is also conducting several need based advanced training programmes for in-service personnels. Assistant managers or executives with experience are eligible to apply for it. But they have to be sponsored by their respective companies. These training courses will focus on field management, factory management, tea manufacture, tea-tasting, quality control, and other aspects. The advanced training programme are meant for improving upon the professional skills, techniques, competence of the executives enabling them to take on the contingencies and deliver their best to the industry. Problems and their solutions will be dealt with in these programme modules by the faculties who are experts in their spheres.
